There has been lots of talk in the news of late of strangers going and paying off peoples Christmas debt owed on their lay-a-way purchases at various stores such as Kmart and Walmarts across America. These people have opened their wallets to share monetarily and give kindness towards those they do not know. This show of kindness in these hard economic times has brought many of it’s recipients to tears and given great joy of relief to those who have received this gift from these mysterious kindhearted strangers.

 Kindness is a sign of a loving heart which is one of the greatest of all virtues. A kind person is good, pleasant and always appreciated. There is much talk today about ‘Random acts of Kindness’ probably due in part to our society’s decline in these most precious virtues, and people are starving for these kinds of good deeds which were more prevalent in days gone by, but not as common today.

 God is our model of Kindness and shows us Kindness each day by sending us sunshine, rain and snow, crops for food, and everyday provisions to sustain us. (Acts 14:17) We have family and friends who show us love and encouragement and sharing of their wisdom. The kindest act ever was when God sent his only Son to die on the cross for our sins so that we might live forever in heaven. Jesus paid a debt that was not His when he died on the cross for our sins. Even though we don’t deserve it, (Rom 11:6) God shows us mercy and kindness. God’s love is compassionate and longsuffering

 The LORD is gracious and merciful; Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness.

 The LORD is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works,

 All Your works shall give thanks to You, O LORD, And Your godly ones shall bless You.

 They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom and talk of Your power;

 To make known to the sons of men Your mighty acts and the glory of the majesty of Your Kingdom.

Psalms 145:8-12

 God is full of goodness, merciful and patient. God is Kindness itself. Everything He does for us is an act of kindness to help us become all He created us to be. God with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous.

 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;

 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;

 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. “   Romans 3:23-26

 “But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit.” Titus 3:4,5

God forgives our sins and offers us salvation…a guarantee of living forever with him in heaven. If God were not kind we would get the punishment we deserve, but because He is kind we get the forgiveness we don’t deserve because of what Jesus Christ did on the cross. In God’s kindness He meets our needs. God’s kindness has hands and feet and is not just merely talk but comes through the acts of others as well. As Christians we especially need to remember this in our attitudes and actions towards others. Too many times I’ve seen this lacking in Christians and in Christianity today. There is this self-righteousness which is unbecoming and uncharacteristic of a Christian. God tells us how we must behave towards others. It is not our place to condemn and banish others. When we must judge and discern a matter or a situation, we are to judge fairly with righteous judgment, with mercy (Zechariah 7:9) and restoration, and reconciliation. (Ephesians 4:32)

 ”Thus has the LORD of hosts said, ‘Dispense true justice and practice kindness and compassion each to his brother; and do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.’

 But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears from hearing. They made their hearts like flint, so that they could not hear the law and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophesy; therefore great wrath came from the LORD of hosts. “ (Zechariah 7:9-12)

 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ  has forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:32)

 ”Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. ” (Proverbs 3:3)

 It has been said that true kindness is not a single act but a lifestyle. Kindness looks after the needs of others. Kindness does not look the other way when someone is in need.  Start showing kindness in the small things you do and say and eventually you will be kind in all situations.

Jane never knew about her tormented childhood until she began counseling. The counselor was on staff at the church Jane and her husband attended.  Under the counselor’s supervision, Jane remembered how her father had repeatedly raped her, impregnated her, and performed an abortion on her using a coat hanger.  Yet in truth, Jane, at the time of the purported incidents, was a virgin and her father had received a vasectomy years prior to the alleged incest and impregnation.

Kathy had gone to a psychiatrist in an attempt to manage her reaction to a traumatic event her son had experienced.  The psychiatrist used various techniques, including hypnosis and visualization, causing Kathy to remember years of abuse of which she had not been conscious.  As counseling progressed, Kathy became convinced that she had repressed memories of having been in a satanic cult, of murdering and eating babies, and being raped.  When Kathy realized that false memories had been planted, she sued the psychiatrist for malpractice. (1)

Both Jane and Kathy were victims of Recovered Memory Therapy (RMT), the practice of delving back into a counselee’s past fro repressed memories.  The process is based on the presupposition that the mind is like a video recorder and is filled with intact memories of past events that are hidden from the counselee.  Through the use of hypnosis, (2) the therapist helps the subject “remember” these events.

 Life’s problems and man’s sinful behavior always seem to have therapists digging around in the trash cans for solutions.  And these unbiblical strategies come and go from low self-esteem to multiple personality disorder to victimization to dysfunctional to the current trend of recovered memories.  Keeping in line with the treatment of the day, many therapists now believe that nearly everyone is a victim of some sexual abuse, and a great number of the recovered memories pertain to sexual abuse.

 This lack of conscious memories, which purportedly are so traumatic that the mind has had to repress them, is cited as proof of the abuse.  Other recovered memories may include those of abductions by extraterrestrials.  The New York Times reported on a Harvard study which found “people who genuinely believed that they had been taken by extraterrestrials and had built elaborate narratives of space travel, mind control and erotic encounters with beings from other planets.”  (3) Other recovered memories involved satanic rituals or traumas in a “previous” life.  RMT therapists are not put off at all by bizarre “recollections.”  They either take them at face value or believe them to be symbolic of real experiences.

While opposition and lawsuits have slowed the impact of Recovered Memory Therapy, some psychotherapists still use it.

Over the past several decades the RMT movement has swept across America.  Thousands of counselors enthusiastically participated.  Countless cases of alleged abuses that had been repressed in people’s subconscious have been claimed and reported.  Incest and abuse support groups were formed as people “remembered” and “recovered” from their abusive pasts.  Untold seminars, books, tapes, and testimonies accompanied the frenzy of the RTM movement.  Afternoon talk shows showcased housewives, bricklayers, and celebrities telling their heart-wrenching stories of abuse by parents, pastors, teachers, and others.  As a result, thousands of people, insisting that they were innocent, were hauled into court, publicly humiliated, and even imprisoned.

It is a strange and dangerous time when people are being accused, tried, and convicted with no more evidence of guilt than the word of the accuser.

Even some of the therapists’ own number are not too sure.  One psychiatrist likens it to the hysteria and superstitious zeal of the witch trials of the 16^th and 17^th centuries.  It is sad to think how families have been torn apart and loved ones imprisoned on “evidence” provided by memories that come back in dreams and flashbacks.

 2 Thessalonians 3:6 – 14

“Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from every brother who leads an unruly life and not according to the tradition which you received from us.

 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example, because we did not act in an undisciplined manner among you,

 Nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with labor and hardship we kept working night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you;

 Not because we do not have the right to this, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you, so that you would follow our example.

 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order:  if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.

 For we hear that some among you are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies.

 Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet fashion and eat their own bread.

 But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary of doing good.

 If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of that person and do not associate with him, so that he will be put to shame.”

There is no such thing as a secular job for a Christian; all work is a spiritual duty to be done as an opportunity to give glory to God (1 Cor 10:31)  2 Thess 3:6-14  is a perfect example of what God expects of the believer.  Christians are to have a wage earning job and not to leech off of other Christians who work hard and obey the commands from Scripture to work for a living.  (2 Thess 3:8)

 The Biblical ethic of “Work” is spoken about in the bible as a gift from God.  One commentary says: “Man’s occupation with it provides development of skill and productivity, significant contribution, value, meaning and fulfillment in life.  It also prevents idleness which, as clearly seen in the indolent of every society, is debilitating and destructive. It is well said that “idle hands are the devil’s workshop,” God also gave work to man as a means of demonstrating the image of in him who by work satisfaction of serving the needs of other people.”  1

 In Paul’s ministry he dealt with this issue 3 times (2 Thess 3:10, 1 Thess. 4:11-12) and bluntly confronted those who refused to provide for their needs and work.

 The Bible gives instruction as to what our attitude is to be about having a job and working. That we are to provide for our own needs such as for food and shelter,  2 Thess 3:8, and can also help us to contribute to the needs of others. To live our lives in this way is being obedient to God and brings honor to His name.

 But some Thessalonian believers were not living consistently with this biblical view of work. They were causing strife in the church, being busybodies, gossips and troublemakers  (2 Thess 3:11) by refusing to work and leeching off the rest of the congregation. The writer doesn’t reveal their motives. They may have felt it was beneath them to have a job or they may have believed that since Christ could return at any moment having a job and working for a living was pointless, or it may have just been laziness which the bible condemns (Proverbs 10:26; 12:27; 15:19; 24:30-34).  But it is not mentioned of their motives why they failed to work because none of them are valid.  There is no excuse for someone who has the ability and opportunity,  but does not work.   It is not biblical to expect others to pay your way in this world or to expect God to be our servant in giving us a free ride in this life. In fact we are instructed that we are to have nothing to do with one who does this, “but admonish him as a brother.” 2 Thess 3:14,15)  We are not only to have our doctrine right, but our  work ethic right as well. In these most difficult times we must do all we can to stand firmly and live obedient fruitful lives and not grow weary in doing what is good.

2 Cor. 11:4

 One of the problems in Christianity today is that it is readily believed: because something is supernatural it must be of God. The possibility that it might be evil or demonic is rejected. Scriptures that warn believers ( 1 John 4:1, 2 Thess 2:9-12, 2 Thess 2:3-4, 2 Peter 2:1-2, 2 Peter 3:17, 2 Tim 4:3, to test and know that false Christs and false prophets will be in abundance in the last days. These false teachers will cause many to follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned. 2 Peter 2:2.

 False apostles deceive – 2 Corinthians 11:13-15

 False prophets- Matthew 7:15; 24:11 Mark 13:22

 False teachers – Matthew 5:19; 15:9 1 Timothy 1:7; 1 Timothy 4:2; 1 Timothy 6:3; Titus 1:11, 2 Corinthians 11:4

 Christ told his followers and it is recorded in Matthew 24:24, 25 “For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible even the elect. Behold, I have told you in advance.” Even with these warnings from scripture many will plow headlong into deception and follow false teachers and false prophets. There are numerous false teachers on earth today.

 You may have heard good bible teachers say that Satan does not wear a red suit with a pitchfork, he is ever crafty and intelligent, he disguises himself as light and may be beautiful in appearance. ( read 2 Cor. 11:13-15)

 2 Tim 4:3-4

 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.”

It is very dangerous for Christians to seek anything but a deeper and purer relationship with Christ Himself. Any seeking after mere touches or experiences is really nothing but soulishness, and can result in great spiritual deception. Some of the false manifestations that result are merely fleshly, while others can be downright demonic – especially if they involved a ‘casting off of restraint’ or a kind of “wildness”.
